Earlier this week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were spotted outside a gourmet food shop at the Sandy Lane Yacht Club on the Caribbean island of Canouan. He wore shorts, while she wore a flowy dress with a Panama hat, as they strolled hand in hand down the marina. As grainy as the paparazzi photos were, they oozed an air of laidback luxury. (Which is really the ethos of Canouan itself – the isle, which is part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, is often referred to as a place “billionaires go to escape millionaires” due to its remote locale, pristine beaches, and marinas for mega-yachts.)
The royal couple stayed at Soho Beach House Canouan, a tropical outpost of the members-only club Soho House. It’s easy to see why: nestled right upon the private Grand Bay Beach, many of the 40 rooms at the resort are situated right upon the sandy expanse, meaning guests can wake up and walk right outside to the ocean. A beach bar sits right underneath the palm trees, serving up spicy picante cocktails and Margherita pizzas. Meanwhile, a “deli” offers fresh smoothies made from papayas, coconuts and pineapples, as well as wine and frozen yogurt. If that doesn’t sound relaxing enough… there’s also a Cowshed spa.
The interiors are executed in a boho-chic, beachy style: airy canopy beds with mosquito nets have white frames with bamboo detailing, whereas straw shaded lamps sit upon turquoise nightstands. Dressers are intentionally weathered to look like they’re made out of driftwood, and terraces feature plush white outdoor furniture.
It’s a familiar – and perhaps even meaningful – hotel choice for the couple: their first date was at Dean Street Townhouse, a Soho House location in London. Since then, the two have used other outposts of the group across the world for private and romantic getaways, including Soho Farmhouse in the Cotswolds, and Soho House Toronto, where they attended a Halloween party with Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. If they have a loyalty program, it seems Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are at the top of the list.
